Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I feel like we might finally be on the edge of seeing widespread HDR uptake.
I recently discovered Gain Maps! It's a technique that allows existing file types such as JPG to display HDR content, but to also gracefully fall back to SDR if HDR is unavailable, or if the application simply doesn't understand gain maps. Basically, they store an SDR version of the file, but also store a "gain map" layer in the metadata of the file that gets applied to the SDR version, and transforms it to HDR.
Most modern phones can produce gain maps (though they don't always do so by default). Firefox and Chrome can both support HDR (though they're both in the early stages).
My TV, my monitors, my phone, all display HDR.
All that's missing is HDR content. We finally have all the parts of the framework to display HDR in play, and a backward compatible path to get there, so hopefully, finally, we'll start to see more content!

You can transition to any extent as a nonbinary person (as can other trans people).
You can change nothing at all beyond your label. You can take all the steps that trans men or women may typically take. You can try a mix of it all.
It's your journey and you get to decide how to pursue it.

For those of you who do parkrun, and more specifically, parkrun challenges, you can imagine how excited I am about this! I got my 59th stopwatch bingo last week!
One more to go!

Just saying, I made bangers and mash for dinner tonight and added flour, salt and a bit of tomato sauce.

Insta 360 is planning a drone release!
I just discovered that Insta 360 is apparently going to release two drones sometime this year! I've been ranting to anyone that will listen about how much potential there is for 360 video on a drone, and my surprise that it's not really an option, and apparently someone heard my rants :P
Anyway, I'm a bit excited and can't wait to get my hands on them!
I mean the cameras will be like on the portable insta 360 camera. Two 180 lenses on opposite sides, with software stitching of the two to make them appear as a single 360 view. However, when you hold the camera in your hand, on the preview screen on the device itself, you have a more natural field of view that looks like a more traditional camera view. But all that is is a real time view of a small portion of the 360 sphere, it's not a dedicated lens.
And I imagine the drone will be the same, but the two lenses will look up and down rather than front and back. And the field of view you use to fly the drone, will just be a real time portion of that that imitates a traditional drone piloting camera perspective.
Though I just realised you might have meant something else by FPV. At the moment, FPV view for drones is basically just a large front facing camera, projected in to your face like a large virtual screen. It's not like VR, because there is no peripheral vision or the like. It's just a large virtual screen in front of your face.
But with a 360 view, the FPV experience would change significantly!

Kaity and I went to a cafe for breakfast this morning, and when we went to leave and pay the bill, we found out that the ladies sitting at the table across from us had already paid for our breakfast.
We have no idea why, but my running theory is because I said "Hello puppy" to their doggo and gave it a scratch behind the ears!

Expecting the Unexpected
This is a long story, much longer than my usual posts. It feels like months, but most of it took place over four days. If medical details unsettle you, I recommend you skip this one and go find you…Exploring life, parenting, and social justice
“Uh hi, I’m looking for a book on sharks, by, uh, B L a’Haj”
The librarian smiled, “do you know what country it was published in, was it Canada?”
“Australia, i-I think” the visitor stammered, hefting their backpack and looking about.
The librarian interacted with their console. “Ah yes, here it is. It’s in our archival collection, quite a way back in the shelves.” The console spat out a card. Here is a map to the shelf location.
Book lovers know that if you go deep enough into the stacks of a good library you could end up anywhere. The corridors of L-space join all libraries everywhere, every when.
In the State Library of South Australia, a door opened an a teenager with a backpack emerged. “Hello”, a librarian
smiled. “did you find your book?”
“Uh yes!”, they held up a tome.
“Good, good. It will tell you everything you need to know, welcome to Adelaide!”

Friendica
Friendica, why are you like this? 15 years it's been around, it's a super mature platform, it talks to Bluesky, peertube, the micro blog fediverse (mastodon/sharkey etc), the threadiverse (gup.pe, lemmy, piefed & mbin), it has amazing filters, sensible (and customisable) timeline viewing options... It's everything I could possibly want in a fediverse platform...
But somehow, I just struggle to love it...
I'm going to try though!

@Droppie So, Friendica...
I love its timeline view and its feature set. But I hate everything else about it. It's also a real dog to run when it gets a bigger user base.
All of those things combined, mean that I've started using it, but I really don't want to open it up and have to moderate yet another space.
I would be open to adding a handful of people, but 1) the userbase would need to remain small enough that I can keep track of everyone and trust them to not need moderation 2) I wouldn't be doing much moderation on incoming stuff from remote instances (aside from defederating the worst of the worst) and 3) if it has technical issues, it won't get the same priority as our regular instances.
So, with all of that being said, if you're still interested, you're welcome to apply
Ta Ada. Oh wotta bummer, you've confirmed lots that i've already discovered myself from several European F instances over recent years 😭
It's also a real dog to run when it gets a bigger user base
It was this [seen only as a mere user, not knowing what was happening behind the curtain] that drove me insane, & ultimately caused me to abandon several of those "bigger" European ones. The latency just became too much to endure [eg, timelines sometimes hours behind (but commonly tens of minutes), new posts i'd try to send would often take 1' - 5' to actually send (not always, but too often to bear), manually reloading the timeline often (but not always) took some minutes to complete]. Even my one surviving instance, better than most of its forebears, still suffers bouts of this which makes me wanna tear hair.
Additionally, i began to suspect a possibility of fundamentally flawed database structure or processing, as one instance actually catastrophically destroyed itself & its owner opted to just abandon it, two others suffered multiple bouts of unreliability that took them offline for days at a time, & even my current surviving one suffered some calamity a few months ago & could not be repaired, though the owner was able to restore a backup from a few days before.
all of that being said, if you're still interested, you're welcome to apply
I sincerely appreciate the offer, but it seems not worthwhile now. My primary interest in sounding you out on this was that til now i'd not found any Oz / NZ instances that were Open, & that i felt i could trust. All those i had/have, were northern hemi as mentioned. One of my interests in trying an Oz one was to see if an expected latency reduction / performance increase might actually ensue... or not.
Ta & best wishes with it.
